To prevent injuries it is imperative that forklift operators receive proper training and supervision. There are protocols in place to protect worker safety that can be found in both the Occupational Health and Safety Act and construction regulations. There are certain dangers inherent in the operating of heavy machinery such as forklifts, so it is a job best handled by those who have been trained.

It is the responsibility of an employer to be sure that all workers operating heavy machinery have been properly trained and are comfortable with all aspects of its operation. Anyone working in the same areas as heavy machinery should be made aware of the potential dangers and proper safety precautions. There should always be adequate supervision while this machinery is in use.

An employee who needs to operate a forklift away from direct supervision needs to receive additional training so that they can operate it safely. It is important that this employee be aware of all the potential dangers involved with the operation of a forklift, and the best way to protect all those working in its vicinity. There should be procedures in place that must be followed if an employee is injured, and it is the employers job to be sure that the forklift operator knows how to follow them.
