Forklift Operation

All workers who are responsible for operating a forklift should receive adequate training on safe handling methods.

Forklifts are potentially dangerous equipment, and any misuse or reckless behavior by an operator can lead to equipment damage or even worse, injuries. There are government regulations, known as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and construction regulations that are in place to help protect worker safety. The regulations are in place to ensure that employers look out for worker safety when it comes to the operation of forklifts and their accessories.

To protect worker safety they should be not only trained, but well supervised during their operation of a forklift.

It is the responsibility of an employer to be sure that their forklift operators are competent. Employers can follow some simple steps to fulfill this obligation. There are also special procedures required when an employee will be operating a forklift without direct supervision.

The first step is to inform the employee of all the potential dangers associated with operating a forklift. The worker should be given complete information on how to protect themselves and their coworkers from these dangers. The last step is for a worker to prove their competency in handling a forklift to someone who is thoroughly trained in its safe operation.
