Loading Dock Safety
Any worker who enters the loading zone
needs to be trained in all the potential hazards and how to avoid them.
Safety should always be the number one
concern on a loading dock. The injuries that happen on loading docks
tend to be very severe, even sometimes fatal. Workers need to be aware
of and follow the strict guidelines that have been issued by OSHA if
they are working on a loading dock.
There is constant activity from multiple directions when working in a
loading zone. There are trucks continually moving back and forth between
locations on every construction site and in every warehouse. There is so
much activity at one time, with forklifts and loading ramps, as well as
other loading equipment working to complete tasks as quickly as
possible. In addition to this you will find workers walking through this
area as they go about completing their tasks.
Any worker who enters the loading zone needs to be trained in all the
potential hazards and how to avoid them. There are conditions that make
the job even more dangerous, such as poor weather and uneven surfaces
that are out of the workers control. This makes proper training even
more important.
A worker operating a forklift or other loading equipment needs to be
trained in its proper operation, as well as the procedures they would
need to follow if an accident occurred. All safety regulations need to
be consistently and strictly enforced. In addition to worker training,
equipment should be evaluated frequently to be sure it is in proper
working condition. To help prevent serious injuries to workers, safety
should be the number one concern of any loading zone.
